Starred Monsters
Three-star rat with yellow stars above its name
A starred monster — stars above the name (★★★).

Starred monsters are tougher elites of a normal creature. They hit harder, drop more loot, and have a much higher chance to roll enchanted (rare) equipment (see Items Rarity). They show one, two or three stars above the name.

How they appear

After you kill almost any creature, there is a chance that a starred version of the same type spawns on that tile (after a short teleport effect). A starred monster never spawns another star.

Bosses never become starred (for example Ferumbras, Orshabaal, Morgaroth, Ghazbaran, Demodras, and similar). Summons also never spawn stars.

Combat bonuses

Values are extra on top of the base monster. Damage scales melee skill and the maximum of spells (the minimum does not).

HP Speed Damage EXP Loot chance
+50% +50% +50% +50% +50% (×1.5)
★★ +100% +100% +100% +100% +100% (×2)
★★★ +200% +200% +200% +200% +200% (×3)

Star EXP adds to the boosted monster bonus. Example: +30% boosted and ★ +50% = +80% EXP on that kill.

The loot bonus makes items appear more often from the corpse. Rarity is rolled separately (see below).

Enchanted loot

After an enchantable item drops, it may roll rarity. Normal monsters enchant rarely; starred monsters enchant much more often (including legendary). ★ / ★★ / ★★★ use the same starred rarity rules — more stars mainly mean a harder fight and more frequent loot, not a different rarity ladder.

Most enchanted pieces from hunts still come from starred corpses. Quest chests and rarity scrolls are separate sources. Elites can also drop extra gold and rarity-upgrade items on top of their normal loot table.
